Hatteras 58′ Boat Windows – Installation:

Lookout Boat Windows are designed to be as easy as possible to install. The installation of these Hatteras 58′ boat windows demonstrate examples taping off the window opening and replacement window in preparation for epoxy. With careful planning, the installation is a one man job, but having an extra pair of hands is helpful.
- Prepare bracing materials.
- Apply painter’s tape on the new window frame to avoid extra epoxy on fiberglass and make clean up easy.
- Dry fit the replacement window in place. Use a pencil to draw around the new frame perimeter.
- Place painter’s tape on outside perimeter of pencil mark.
- Grind the area clean with 80 grit sandpaper.
- Grind the backside of the frame where it will attach with 80 grit sandpaper.
- Wipe down sanded areas with denatured alcohol.
- Use West System 6 Ten Epoxy on the window opening and the backside of the window frame.
- The epoxy begins kicking off in approximately 42 minutes, which is your working time.
- Brace off the window on the outside, or use suction cups on the glass to pull in from the inside.
Bracing
Choosing how to brace the windows will depend on other factors. If other boat restoration services such as paint is scheduled, some of these steps may not apply. However, if only the windows are being installed, take steps not to scratch the paint. Use painter’s tape on the areas where bracing will be set. In some cases, if you will need an extra hand. But in a pinch, a 2×4 block will work. Just hot glue a 2×4 block into place to help hold the window (pictured below) careful not to damage the paint. The hot glue will not hurt the paint. If the boat is scheduled for paint as well, bracing shortcuts can be taken.
